Inside the effect
What the Hug effect actually does.
Hug is a PixVerse effect, which means the instruction lives inside the engine and stays the same for every run. Its job is composition first and motion second: it reads the two people in your photo, places them together in one scene at a matched scale, and then animates the embrace. In the sample above you can watch that order — the pair are standing together before anything else happens.
The photo is the only variable. What the engine preserves is faces, hair and clothing; what it rebuilds is everything between and behind the two subjects, so a busy background is not something to spend effort on.
It takes one photo containing two people. If you have two separate portraits, put them side by side in a single image first — the sample was made exactly that way — and the engine treats the pair as its two subjects.

Two people, similar size
Faces at roughly the same scale give the engine a matched pair. One large face and one small one becomes a large person and a small one.
Waist up, both facing forward
The hug is a torso movement. If both subjects show shoulders and arms, the embrace has something to work with.
Similar light on both
The engine matches the two into one scene. A backlit portrait beside a flash portrait looks composited, because it is.
Plain backgrounds help
Everything between the two subjects gets rebuilt anyway. A plain wall or open sky gives the engine less to invent.

Group photos confuse it. Hug is written for two subjects; with three or four people in frame the engine picks two and the others drift, blur, or vanish.
Full-length shots with small faces lose the likeness. The engine keeps the face it can see, and a face that is thirty pixels wide is not much to keep.
Hands crossed in front of the body, or a bag on the shoulder, tend to survive badly through the embrace, because the arms have to move and the engine has to guess what was behind them.
